Composting Not such a dirty word!

You may remember the putrid pile of rotting garbage at the back of your place when you were a kid; where Dad would brave the flies and vermin to turn the heap over and “feed” it. Although we have always known that composting is great for the environment and our gardens, the extra work and unpleasantness remembered from long ago may be putting you off trying it for yourself.

Today, there’s no need to fear the compost heap and what lies within. Modern advancements mean that composting in your backyard can be a rewarding activity and also an educational one for the kids.

Did you know?

  • Composting food waste can dramatically reduce CO2 emissions. When food is sent to landfill, it rots and emits the gases that contribute to global warming. Composting emits almost no gas at all.

  • Compost is a nutrient rich booster for your garden.

  • Even if you live in an apartment, you can still do your bit. There are benchtop options that work equally as well as the outdoor varieties.

Sutherland Shire Council makes it super easy to start composting! They hold regular Composting Workshops to show you how to do it. They even give you a FREE compost bin or worm farm to get you started! Check the link for details of their upcoming workshops.
