Decluttering Tips for Your Bedroom

Do you have a bulging wardrobe that is groaning under the weight of clutter? Here are some ideas to get you started on getting your bedroom clutter under control and bringing back a sense of peace and relaxation to this important space in your home.

1. Decide to start and just do it! Often, the first obstacle is getting past our procrastination over an unpleasant task. Focus on the end goal of having a more pleasant environment to relax in and get going.

2. Tackle one area at a time. Your bedroom didn’t become cluttered in one day, so don’t expect to be able to fix it all in a day either.

3. Take a long hard look at one area and decide what needs to be done. Do you need to clear rubbish? Are there many items that you haven’t used in a long time? Grab a few garbage bags and start sorting. Use one for garbage, one for giving away and one for storage, being careful not to overload the one labelled “storage”! In this bag, you want only those things that you can’t do without but have no room to have them on display or to use them. These may be sentimental items like cards, letters or souvenirs that you just can’t bear to part with.

If it helps, set a timer for 5 mins, 15 mins or whatever you need to tackle a small area and go for it! Get as much done as you can in this time limit and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment it brings. Then, have a break and do something else or continue the momentum with another timed round of decluttering. It won’t take long for you to see and feel the benefits of each round of decluttering, making it easier to keep going and make your bedroom a place of rest and peace instead of storage and clutter.
