How to Spruce Up Your Front Door

First impressions have a big impact.  If the entrance of your house is looking a bit drab consider making a few simple changes to create a welcoming atmosphere for your guests.

For a warm welcome add some bold colour. Painting your door will really change the look of your home quickly and easily.  For extra ‘pop’ choose a colour that suits your home but contrasts with the rest of the exterior.

A new door handle can add flair and create a specific look. From vintage to ultra-modern, country-style to quirky, entrance sets are sold as complete kits and are realtively easy to install. Remember to choose something that will cover any marks left by the old handle.

Give your feet a welcome. Is your doormat scuffed and aging?  A fresh new doormat is one of the simplest ways to smarten up your front step.

Make it easy for people to find you.  Prune back any overhanging or out-of control plants from around your pathway and front door.  Consider repainting or replacing your address number to make it more visible and to match the look of your home.

Greet guests with flowers. A pot or two of colourful annuals or geraniums next to your front entrance can create a delightful first impression.  For cottage style try fragrant flowering herbs like lavender or rosemary or, if you prefer a more formal look, place a pair of potted topiary on either side of your doorstep.

Clean up! The simplest and cheapest solution of all is to tidy up.  Removing tatty garden furniture, weeding the footpath, sweeping the steps and giving the walls and door a good wipe down will work miracles!
