What to Look for in a Handyman

A good handyman - or woman - is worth their weight in gold. We all have those odd jobs around the home that take more skill or more time than we have to get done. To have someone you can trust to do the work for you and do it well is invaluable.

So what sort of qualities do we look for in this gem of a person?

Trustworthiness Your handyman is someone who will be coming in and out of your home, or your investment property, perhaps when you're not there. You need to be able to trust them. This is one reason why it's often good to find a handyman through personal connections. Ask your friends or neighbours. Try enquiring at your local hardware store or real estate agent for some recommendations.

Reliability We all want someone who can commit! A good handyman should turn up when he or she says they will, and get the work done in a timely fashion.

A High Standard of Work This almost goes without saying but you most certainly need someone who can do the work that you want done, and can do it well. Ask to see some of their other work. Maybe they have a website displaying photographs of their work and recommendations from other clients. This is also another good reason to find your handyman through personal recommendations.

Honesty and Fair Pricing Of course price matters, but it's better that you get an honest quote from someone and have the work done well than go for the cheapest quote. If you're paying an hourly rate, you want to know that the person doing the work is not dragging it out. It works both ways of course - if you want a good handyman you should be prepared to pay them a fair price for the work they do.
